Thinking of Selling?

We deal in a wide range of rare books; to get a sense of what these are, please have a browse through our online offerings. We actively seek first editions and collectible volumes in most fields, and we have a particular interest in the literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

We do not buy books in heavily-used or poor condition; we intend to sell the books we buy to our customers, and therefore a minimum requirement is that they should look good on the shelf.

Please don't send books to us until or unless we ask you to.

What we need from you

If you would like to sell us a book or collection of books we will need you to email us with the following information:

  • A basic description of the book, including:
    • author
    • title
    • publisher
    • place of publication
    • date of publication
    • whether it has a dust-wrapper or not
  • Notes of any faults with the book, for instance:
    • ownership inscriptions or labels
    • price-clipping
    • excessive wear or rubbing
    • other noticable defects
  • Photographs of:
    • the binding
    • the dust-wrapper
    • the title page
    • the copyright page

You can send these to our main email account. Please don't telephone with this information, as the photographs are essential.

There are some books we likely won't be interested in, and these include:

  • Archaeology
  • Theology
  • Books not in English
  • Ex-library books
  • Most large coffee table books
  • Book Club editions and Reader's Digest
  • Mills and Boon
  • Paperbacks
  • Reprint editions

First and foremost we are interested in first editions, rare or quality books, in the best condition that we can find them. If you have good quality secondhand books that you think might be of interest, please consult the buying guidance of our sister business, Hall's Bookshop, for further information.

We regret that we are not able to offer valuations for books, either informally or for probate or insurances purposes at the present time.
