— Marcel Proust
Amstelodami: Sumptibus Andreae Frisii, MDCLXXI [1671]. [Alchemy/Medicine] FIRST EDITION. Duodecimo (14 x 9cm), pp.[22] 342 [18]. With an engraved frontispiece, title-page vignette, and five full-page engraved plates. Contemporary full limp vellum, titled in black ink to spine. Edges speckled red. Gently toned throughout, largely clean but for some minor marking/soiling to text. Heavier marking to pastedowns, small bookseller's (Ebenezer Palmer) label to front. Toning to textblock edges. Toning/yellowing to vellum, a few marks to boards. Wear to extremities and joints. Very good. 'The Triumphal Chariot of Antimony' (1604) by Basilius Valentinus was an informational book on the alchemical properties of antimony. He believed it could be a powerful medical component if prepared correctly, but a harmful poison if prepared poorly. The latter half of the text is filled with recipes for antimonial cures, oils, and elixirs. Dutch anatomist Theodor Kerckring republished the text here with the addition of his commentary.
