Amstelodami: Apud Joannem Janssonium, MDCLVII [1657]. [Sea travel] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (16 x 10cm), pp.96. In the original Latin. Later brown half calf, nonpareil marbled paper over boards. Black gilt-lettered title label to spine. All edges speckled red. Text gently toned and heavily annotated in faint pencil throughout. Light mark to pastedown. Binding is fairly recent and bright, a few small scuffs to calf, mild wear to joints and extremities. Very good. Glauber was one of the world's earliest modern chemists. This small book was aimed at helping seamen (probably those in the Dutch East India Company) survive their long perilous journeys. The long Latin title loosely translates as follows: ['In this work, it is taught and demonstrated how those voyaging across the seas may provide for themselves and find relief against hunger, thirst, and even the diseases that can befall them during a long journey. Written with benevolent intent and published for the sake of the affection, aid, comfort, and relief of all who undertake great and protracted voyages for the welfare of their country]. Item #76165
