" It is a man's duty to have books. A library is not a luxury, but one of the necessaries of life. "
— Henry Ward Beecher
London: The Crime Club by Collins, 1942. [Murder Mystery] FIRST EDITION, first impression. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.160. Publisher's red cloth in the striking Stead-designed dust jacket, which displays the title highlighted in book spines arranged on three of the library shelves, unpriced for export. This is the correct British jacket with the generic Crime Club ad to the rear panel; the Australian wrapper has a different setting, showing three recent Collins publications. Contents clean, Christmas 1942 gift note to endpaper, jacket with a few chips and tears (neatly stabilised to reverse side), correspondingly sunned to cloth beneath. Shows well. A decent example of a fragile wartime production. Agatha Christie's second Miss Marple novel, and one of the most famous titles from the world's best-known mystery writer. This classic whodunnit is ranked among her very best works. Artist Leslie Stead designed both this iconic cover and Christie's Sparkling Cyanide. He worked for other female novelists published by the Crime Club (E.C.R. Lorac and Ngaio Marsh), was also employed by Hodder, set up a design studio and was famed for his illustrations for the long-running Biggles adventure series. Item #76106
