With four half-tone plates including a frontispiece, ten full-page and other frequent in-text illustrations, all by George Hutchinson. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles and decorative blind stamping to spine and upper board. No ink inscriptions. Thick, heavy paper is toned/spotted as usual, endpapers browned, dampmark to half-title. Covers are clean, gilt bright, spine a shade darkened, very light wear to extremities. Shows very well externally. A Study In Scarlet (1888) was the first Sherlock Holmes novel, and features the initial meeting and debut case for the great amateur detective Sherlock Holmes with his new-found colleague; the narrator Dr. John Watson.
