"Books are a hardbound drug with no danger of overdose. I am the happy victim of books."
— Karl Lagerfeld
London: George Newnes, 1902. [Sherlock Holmes] FIRST EDITION, first impression. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.viii; 359 [1]. Illustrated with 16 black and white half-tone plates, including a frontispiece, by Paget. Publisher's red cloth blocked in gilt and black to upper, and in gilt to spine, to a design by Alfred Garth Jones. Contents clean, no ink inscriptions, minor spotting to endpapers, discreet ticket to pastedown, cloth gently handled with a nicely rounded spine which is a touch sunned. Overall a clean, near fine copy. Arguably Holmes' most charismatic case, and one which has consequently been adapted for stage and screen numerous times - and only about half of those times as a parody. Item #73741
