Illustrated with 16 black and white half-tone plates, including a frontispiece, by Paget. Publisher's red cloth blocked in gilt and black to upper, and in gilt to spine, to a design by Alfred Garth Jones. Housed in an elegant leather-spined red clamshell box. A nice bright, square copy, with intact hinges, nicely rounded spine. A blue-illustrated monogram bookplate to half-title. Page edges free from spotting, a few light spots to endpapers, cloth extremities very lightly rubbed. Box with small mark to spine and a bump to top corners. Near fine. Arguably Holmes' most charismatic case, and one which has consequently been adapted for stage and screen numerous times - and only about half of those times as a parody. Item #71815
