Contemporary red full morocco by BAYNTUN of Bath for Brentano's of Chicago, with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spine, and gilt ruling to boards. All edges gilt, with gilt decoration to turn-ins, and pink endpapers. A little light general wear, including some rubbing to joints, otherwise a lovely crisp, near fine copy. Dickens' great satire on the shortcomings of Victorian government and society, focusing upon the institution of debtor's prisons, represented by Marshalsea Gaol, where the author's own father had been imprisoned. Little Dorrit is a masterly evocation of the state and psychology of imprisonment and is one of the supreme works of Dickens's maturity. First published in 1857. Item #70545
