"Books serve to show a man that those original thoughts of his aren't very new after all."
— Abraham Lincoln
London: Chapman and Hall, 1850. [Literature] FIRST 'CHEAP' EDITION. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.xiv; [ii]; 303; [1]. Contemporary brown quarter calf, marbled paper over boards. With black morocco title label and raised bands to spine. Illustrated frontispiece, tan endpapers, all edges marbled. Text in two columns. Spotting to preliminaries and endpapers, light scuffing to marbled boards, mild wear to joints and extremities. Very good. The author's first major published work. Though not a novel, the book has retained the high regard which it first met, and displays the young Dickens's piercing understanding of early nineteenth-century English society. Item #70390
