Publisher's green cloth with black embellishment blocked to upper and spine, lettered in black and gilt to spine. Illustrated frontispiece, illustrated title-page, black and white illustrated plates throughout. Black endpapers. Bookplate of Leonard Lionel Bloomfield (1887-1949) to front paste-down. Infrequently spotted throughout. Spotting and toning to edges of text-block. Hinges cracked, front hinge split and archivally repaired. Dulling to spine gilt. Mild edgewear. Very good. Collins' epistolary novel is considered to be amongst the earliest pieces of mystery fiction, and is certainly a fine piece of 'shocker' writing. You can't go wrong with a sinister warning from a seemingly mad woman encountered in Hampstead, a bit of a mismatched love story, and a shady character who goes by the truly fantastic name of Sir Percival Glyde. This 'new edition' includes illustrations by F. A. Fraser. This book was previously owned by Leonard Lionel Bloomfield, an American linguist. Most of his library (a collection of 13,500 books) is now held by the Brighton Jubilee Library after being donated by his widow in 1917. Item #70374
