New York, NY: D. Van Nostrand, Publisher, 1881. [Native Americans] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (18 x 12cm), pp.235 [3]. Recently re-backed in red calf, with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spine, and the original red calf boards with gilt and blind ruling to margins. Lightly trimmed to all edges, with the original marbled endpapers. A few patches of damage to endpapers. Toned throughout, with occasional marks and spots. A faint washed library stamp to title page, with further occasional stamps throughout. A heavy pencil ownership to title page, and an ink library inscription to copyright page. Moderate wear to original boards. Restored to an attractive, practical condition. Very good. Poole inherited land in Wisconsin in 1854, and later served as Lieutenant Colonel in the 12th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. According to the Wisconsin Veterans' Museum: "In 1869 he was appointed by General Sherman an "Agent for the Sioux Indians," and was stationed in Whetstone Creek Reservation in Dakota Territory. In December of 1870, he was relieved of Indian service duty and reassigned to the 22nd Infantry Regiment at Fort Randall, Dakota Territory. In 1880 he was assigned to recruiting service in New York then became a Paymaster in Washington Territory in 1882, where he received a promotion to Major. As required by the Army, he was retired on his 64th birthday in 1892. He returned to Madison in 1895, and traveled the world before his death." Item #60377
