With presentation note to the flyleaf 'The sixth will have / to wait. / x / Ian. (underlined). A fine copy in a near fine jacket. Inscribed copies of book club editions are particularly scarce. Housed in a bespoke black cloth clamshell to a uniform design by Gilbert. The recipient is Marion 'Oatsie' Leiter, a close friend of the author whose name Fleming had appropriated for James Bond's trusted ally Felix Leiter of the CIA and Pinkerton's Detective Agency. Marion Leiter had recommended the James Bond novels to her friend Senator John F. Kennedy while recovering from an operation, and she subsequently hosted a dinner so both men could meet. The two became friends and, in a literary article in Life Magazine, President Kennedy cited 'From Russia With Love' as one of his favourite reads giving Fleming significant exposure in America. The wedding reception of their mutual friend Ivar [Felix] Bryce was held at Marion Leiter's home in Aiken, South Carolina. Item #55985
