Item #51025 Poetical Works of Matthew Arnold. Matthew ARNOLD.

Poetical Works of Matthew Arnold.

London: Macmillan, 1913. [Poetry] FINELY BOUND. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.[xii]; 510. Riviere binding of contemporary brown half morocco over purple cloth boards, with raised bands, gilt title and extra gilt to spine, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Presentation note to "Miss D.M. Lapage", the commandant of the Kent 142 Volunteer Ambulance Detachment 1914-1919, pasted to verso of front free endpaper. Internally clean and free from spotting, minor mark to margin of frontispiece. Spine a little sunned, gilt bright and attractive. Near fine. 142 VAD were based in Walmer, formed in August 1914. Miss Lapage had been commandant of Kent 22 from 1913, but was transferred to the 142 on the outbreak of the war and the transformation of St Anselm's, Walmer, into a hospital. The presentation note describes the book as a gift from the detachment to Miss Lapage, in remembrance of their work together -- it is signed by twenty-two different hands, presumably all VAD nursers working under Lapage.
