London: A. White and Co., 1957. [Oil Industry Advertisements] FIRST EDITION. Quarto (29 x 29cm), pp.[26]. A full page colour illustration by Kneebone to face every page of text. Publisher's pink illustrated paper over boards, showing a mustachioed gentleman with an oil can against a pink background to upper; rear board shows Shell logo and slogan "Leadership in Lubrication". Moderate wear to spine, with bumps to corners, otherwise a bright, clean copy. Very good. This somewhat scarce volume gathers together a number of attractively illustrated advertisements created by Shell and BP to promote their manufacture of lubricants for various industries. As the introductory note has it, 'the enjoyable study of these advertisements may well remind the reader that for every modern industrial process there is a specialised grade of Sea Shell Lubricant'. The Kneebone illustrations have something of a Heath Robsinson feel, and humorously depict the complexity of modern industrial processes often alongside their traditional counterparts, for instance Rope Manufacture, Laundering, and Glass Working. Kneebone himself was a founding member of ICOGRADA, the international council of communication design, and was president from 1979-81. He was also the secretary of the Festival of Britain's Exhibition Presentation Panel. Item #43435
