London: A. White and co., 1957. Quarto. Bound in publisher's pictorial paper boards, showing a mustachioed gentleman with an oil can against a pink background to front board, rear board shows Shell logo and slogan "Leadership in Lubrication". A curious book, illustrated throughout with colour plates by Kneebone. Binding is presentable, rubbed at spine, bumped at corners and spine ends. Internally clean and free from foxing. This somewhat scarce volume gathers together a number of attractively illustrated advertisements created by Shell and BP to promote their manufacture of lubricants for various industries. As the introductory note has it, 'the enjoyable study of these advertisements may well remind the reader that for every modern industrial process there is a specialised grade of Sea Shell Lubricant'. The Kneebone illustrations have something of a Heath Robsinson feel, and humorously depict the complexity of modern industrial processes often alongside their traditional counterparts, for instance Rope Manufacture, Laundering, and Glass Working. Kneebone himself was a founding member of ICOGRADA, the international council of communication design, and was president from 1979-81. He was also the secretary of the Festival of Britain's Exhibition Presentation Panel. Item #43435
