N.p. [London: Elstree Studios/ABPC], Heinemann, 1954. [Literary and cinematic critique] Elstree Studios' report on the Graham Greene spy thriller, considering the story as suitable for filming. 5pp., typed report on rectos only. Perforations down left edge from office binding. Very well preserved. Book is good/very good without jacket. A gritty espionage thriller full of the classic elements of the genre; murder on a train, border crossings, mistaken identity, political assassins, and twists aplenty. Dated 29th October 1953, Grove's report for Elstree provides a summary of the story and reader's comments. The verdict was positive: 'several excellent situations which could provide the basis for a first-class film... strongly recommend.' The rights were picked up by Rank, and filmed in 1957 starring Rod Steiger. Now considered a minor masterpiece of British film noir. A scarce film industry critique from one of Britain's best-known and well-loved film studios. Item #76183
