With a total of 40 engraved plates by Phiz, including a frontispiece and decorated title page. In an attractive half red morocco binding, with cloth-covered sides, marbled endpapers and a.e.g. Discreet ink name 'Paulin Martin' to first blank and half title, Dickens centenary stamp attached to second blank, text leaves toned but clean, plates spotted/browned as usual. Binding pleasingly and lightly aged. Very good indeed. Dickens regarded Chuzzlewit, his final picaresque novel, as his best work. Among its memorable cast of characters are Seth Pecksniff the plagiarising architect, Mrs Gamp the matronly alcoholic, and the definitive patriarch Old Martin Chuzzlewit. Item #74626
