[Detective mystery] This issue contains the FIRST APPEARANCE of controversial Holmes story 'The Adventure of The Cardboard Box', which was suppressed by the author and not included in the contemporaneous book-form printing of 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes'. Original issue magazine format, approx. 9.5 x 6.5 inches with pictorial covers, illustrated throughout, all advertisement leaves present but without the smaller colour insert at the rear. Internally bright and clean. Some chipping to covers and some rust/toning around staples. Very good. The publishing history of this particular Holmes story is rather complex; having appeared in The Strand as part of 'The Memoirs' serial, it was omitted from the British book-form edition, possibly at the request of the author as it contains themes of adultery, and so was unsuitable for younger readers. Having briefly appeared in the US 'Memoirs' collection, it was removed from later printings for similar reasons; it has been suggested the publishers believed the story was too scandalous for the American public. The story eventually appeared in a book-form edition in Britain in 1917 (His Last Bow). Item #71751
