"There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. "
— Oscar Wilde
London: Walter Scott, [March 1890]. [Strange tales] FIRST EDITION, first impression. A major Doyle rarity. Octavo (16 x 12cm), pp.249 [1]. Elegantly hand bound in half tan calf over marbled boards. Bound without the ads. Originally issued in pink paper covers, lacking from this copy and showing some wear to the presumably exposed final leaf (vintage repair at fore-edge). Contents otherwise clean, exterior is fine. A used yet serviceable copy of a scarce book. Doyle's earliest story collection, gathering tales written in his youth. Second and subsequent printings appeared under the title 'The Gully of Bluemansdyke'. Rare indeed; only four copies have appeared at auction since 1977 and none were in the original wraps. Item #70177
