"Outside of a dog, man's best friend is a book. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."
— Groucho Marx
London: Ward and Downey, 1889 [December 1888]. [Strange tale] FIRST EDITION, first impression. A major Doyle rarity. Octavo (18 x 13cm), pp.[4] 151 [1]. Elegantly hand bound in half tan calf over marbled boards. Bound without the ads. Originally issued in paper covers, lacking from this copy and showing some wear to the presumably exposed title page (chipped to corner, a couple of tears with vintage repair). Contents otherwise clean, exterior is fine. A used yet serviceable copy of a scarce book. Doyle's second story, following the legendary debut 'A Study In Scarlet', this title being a rather dark and sinister 'psychic' adventure and a precursor to the author's numerous supernatural tales. A rare beast indeed; only six copies have appeared at auction over the last fifty years and just one was in the original wraps (the Manney copy, rebacked, Sothebys 1991, $1320). Item #70176
Green and Gibson A2a.
