Select Pieces from the Poems of William Wordsworth.

London: James Burns, [1843] no date. [Poetry] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (17 x 14cm), pp.[xii] 233 [8], unpaginated continuation of poetry. Rebound in vellum, gold tooling to spine, maroon label to spine with gilt lettering. Black and white delicately illustrated page borders featuring native plants, illustrative frontispiece of Rodal Mount. Speckled edges, top edge blue. Ex-libris stamp front-paste, previous owner's gift message written in black ink to the first page dated 1844, spotting and toning to flyleaves and preliminaries otherwise internally clean. Toning to edges of textblock, markings to vellum with two maroon patches (3 x 1cm), (2 x 2cm). Very good. William Wordsworth was an English poet who was a central figure in the Romantic movement. Having spent most of his life in the Lake District, and often drawing on the natural world around as inspiration, the frontispiece of Rodal Mount demonstrates the surrounding beauty of his home. Similarly, the illustrated page borders echo the poems' affinity with nature. The publisher's preface argues that 'the English Tongue seems almost in its perfection' in his writing, and states that 'Mr Wordsworth's kindness [...] be duly acknowledged, in consenting to the present compilation.'.
