London: Chapman and Hall, 1870. [Crime Mystery] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (22 x 14cm), pp.[2]; viii; 190; [2]. With twelve engravings by Fildes and a tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Dickens. Red half calf, nonpareil marbled paper over boards. Green label with gilt titles, gilt tooling, and raised bands to spine. All edges marbled and marbled endpapers, all matching design on boards. Interior mostly clean with some infrequent spotting and areas of foxing to preliminaries. Small ownership inscription underneath frontispiece. Calf rubbed and chipped, mostly to joints and extremities. Very good. Charles Dickens' final, unfinished novel. Completing only six of twelve planned instalments before his death, Dickens was never able to reveal the solution to the mystery. Item #64446
