Death Comes as The End.

London: For The Crime Club by Collins, 1945. [Mystery] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.160. Publisher's orange cloth, black titles to spine, pictorial dust-jacket priced at 7/6. Bookplate of noted collector and bibliographer Adrian Homer Goldstone. Contents clean. A very nearly fine, bright copy in similar dust jacket. A groundbreaking novel in which Christie anticipates the modern popularity of historical detective stories by setting her murder plot in ancient Egypt. The book was fully researched, with each chapter scrutinised by leading Egyptologist Prof. Stephen Glanville, who was a colleague of the author's husband, British Museum archaeologist Max Mallowan. Christie accompanied the pair on many excavations and travelled extensively throughout Egypt and the Holy Land. She had a great knowledge of the area and was a junior member of the archaeology team. 'Death Comes as the End' is one of several of her books set in the Middle East. Other classics include 'Murder on the Orient Express' (Syria, 1934), 'Murder in Mesopotamia' (Iraq, 1936), 'Death on the Nile' (Egypt, 1937), 'Appointment with Death' (Jerusalem, 1938), and 'They Came to Baghdad' (Iraq, 1951).
