Book of Recipes.

c. 1910. [Family recipe book] UNIQUE HAND-WRITTEN ITEM. Octavo (18 x 12cm), unpaginated. Hand-written in black and green ink to ruled leaves, roughly two-thirds full. With 16 newspaper recipe clippings pasted to various leaves and six loose recipes, including a fragment of a cardboard box lid. Manufacturer's canvas cloth to softcovers. Title in black ink, hand-written to spine. Many leaves are marked by splashing, glue stains, or spotting. Newspaper clippings are heavily toned, as to be expected. Infrequent ink bleeding. Gutter is visible in some areas. Canvas covers are rubbed and toned, with various stains. Still, well-preserved and very good. A notebook of dinner and dessert recipes, scribed by a few different hands. Additional newspaper clippings carefully plucked from cookery columns and advertisements for brands like 'Bird's Custard Powder' and 'Nelson's Patent Gelatine.' Much would suggest that this book came from a working-class household in the early 20th century, for example, many of the recipes state to boil pies and puddings rather than baking them which was a staple technique of the 1900s. There can also be found certain anachronisms, like the term 'Italian Warehousemen' to describe specialist grocery stores. Item #63630
