Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog).

Bristol: J.W. Arrowsmith, 1889. [Humour] FIRST EDITION, later printing with '11 Quay Street' on title page. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.[4] 315 [1]. Arrowsmith's listings to endpapers. With frequent illustrations by Fredericks. In publisher's aqua cloth, with gilt titles to spine and black titles to upper, including a small rowing illustration. Internally clean, with a few minor creases. Upper hinge starting, but remains firm. Moderate toning and rubbing to cloth. Very good. The ultimate late-Victorian satire of the Great British Holiday, involving an ill-conceived jaunt along the Thames and a host of fabulously English characters including the relentlessly Pan-like canine companion Montmorency. Adapted in many forms, and notably voiced as an audiobook by Hugh Laurie, it develops an idyllically inept vision of England still familiar today. Item #63268
