The Wooden Bowl. Japanese Fairy Tale Series No. 16.

Tokyo, T. Hasegawa, 1888. [Japanese folk literature] FIRST CREPE-PAPER EDITION. Sextodecimo (15 x 10cm), pp.[24]. Washi leaves with text and woodblock-printed colour illustrations by Tosa Matabei. Pictorial woodblock design and black titles to cover. With fukuro-toji pouch binding and Yamato-toji silk stab-ties. Toning to leaves, a few marks here and there. Collector's pencilled '125' inscription to penultimate leaf. The fold connecting the cover and colophon is partially severed. A few leaves creased. Heavy spotting and some wear to front cover, small brown stain to back. Spine partially eroded. Still very good. Takejir Hasegawa was a notable Japanese publisher during the Meiji and Taish eras. With the goal to spread Japanese culture across the globe, he published a series of small crepe-paper bound Japanese fairy stories which were translated into such languages as German, Spanish, French, and English by foreign contemporaries living in Japan. The Wooden Bowl is a well-known tale, and a variation even features in Andrew Lang's Violet Fairy Book. Item #63262
