Item #62696 Fifine at the Fair. Robert BROWNING.
Fifine at the Fair.

Fifine at the Fair.

London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1872. [Poetry] FIRST EDITION. Small octavo (18 x 12cm), pp.[xii]; 171; [1]. Publisher's brown cloth over bevel edged boards, gilt titles to spine, black double ruling to boards, blue endpapers, untrimmed edges. Scholarly notes in black ink throughout. Endpapers toned, ownership inscription to half title page in faded ink, else internally fine, rubbing to board corners and spine head/tail, bumping to boards, more so upper. A very good copy. "It was not without reason that Browning spoke of "Fifine" as 'the most metaphysical and boldest he had written since "Sordello";' and not in all respects was Swinburne's dictum wrong - 'This is far better than anything Browning has yet written.'"
