"Hungry man, reach for the book: it is a weapon. "
— Bertolt Brecht

London: Sampson Low, Marston and Company, 1893. [Romantic fiction] FINELY BOUND. Three volume edition. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.[18] 343 [3]; pp.[10] 361 [3]; pp.[8] 358 [2]. Green half calf, blue and gilt flowered paper over boards and endpapers, gilt titles and decorations to spine, gilt ruling to boards, top edge gilt; others untrimmed, brown ribbon bookmark in all. All internally clean, toning to spines, rubbing to all edges, more so to volume one, wearing to spine edges. A very good set. First published in 1869, 'Lorna Doone' is the ultimate Victorian Romantic Novel, set in Devon in the period between the Restoration and the Monmouth Rebellion. As well the Romeo and Juliet style romance between stolid farmer John Ridd and Gypsy Princess Lorna, the book also brilliantly dramatises the Great Frost of 1683 and the Bloody Assizes of Judge Jeffreys, all while describing the landscape and country ways with an affection worthy of Hardy.
