Horse Under Water. Secret File No.2. A Novel by Len Deighton.
London: Jonathan Cape, 1963. [Cold War spy thriller] UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.255; [1]. Publisher's lime green softcovers with 'greek urn' device repeated in white, titles printed in black, proof-only dust-wrapper designed by Raymond Hawkey. INSCRIBED by Hawkey in black ink to reverse of jacket: 'To | Edward M-O | a good friend | and author of one | the few | reference books | I couldn't | do without | Raymond Hawkey.' Some rubbing to joints, jacket with some soiling, damp marking to top edge. A very good copy. The BIOGRAPHER's COPY; from the collection of Edward Milward-Oliver, the writer, media and film executive, the biographer and also bibliographer of Len Deighton, and author of a tribute to Raymond Hawkey in '007 Magazine', Issue 54. Purchased directly from Mr Milward-Oliver by Jon Gilbert of this firm, with a printed note to that effect loosely inserted. The author's second novel, being the first of his many books for publisher Jonathan Cape. Deighton's [Harry Palmer] spy series was considered by many as the perfect antidote to Ian Fleming's James Bond. Item #61943
