With a frontispiece illustration to each volume, and numerous black and white photographic plates showing Bronte country. Bound in publisher's green cloth with gilt titles and Nouveau-style floral decoration to spines, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Black ink ownership to flyleaf of Jane Eyre volume II and Agnes Grey. Light occasional spotting. Some hinges starting. Some volumes re-cased with new endpapers covering a bookplate. Light mould stain to upper board of Shirley volume II. Shirley and Villette (four volumes) are a slightly darker shade of green to the other volumes. Very good. The first printing of the Thornton Edition of the Novels of the Bronte Sisters, which is considered the definitive complete works, and includes Elizabeth Gaskell's 'Life of Charlotte Bronte'.
