Dombey and Son. Or, Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son, Wholesale, Retail and Exportation.

London: Bradbury and Evans, 1848. [Classic literature] FIRST EDITION, bound from the original parts, complete with half-title. Octavo (22 x 15cm), pp.[xvi]; 624; [1] errata; [1]. Illustrated with frontispiece and vignette and a further thirty-eight plates. Contemporary half tan calf over marbled paper boards, with raised bands and red title label to spine, full gilt back, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. Internally clean, with some marginal browning to plates as expected. Binding has some scuffs to sides, older repair to headcap and joint. Very good. This landmark novel weaves together a number of stories concerning a self-important merchant and his two children. Dickens takes aim at arranged marriages, and along the way deals with child cruelty, broken and abusive familial relationships, and the fears elicited by the advent of the railway - which, towards the end of his life, Dickens was to experience for himself while writing Our Mutual Friend.
