With fifty wood-engraved illustrations by John Tenniel, including a frontispiece. Contemporary red half calf with raised bands, gilt titles to a black label on the spine, and marbled paper over boards. Green endpapers, and all edges speckled red. Black ink gift inscription to half-title dated Christmas 1871. Heavy thumbing throughout, with occasional small marks, and some spotting to blanks and facing leaves. Moderate wear to binding, with some re-colouring to joints and corners. Very good. The sequel to the Kafka-esque children's fantasy 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' (1870), featuring more wilfully contrariwise animate objects, as well as the famous 'Jabberwocky' and 'The Walrus and the Carpenter' poems.
