Debits and Credits.

London: MacMillan and Co., 1926. [Strange tales] FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.[vi]; 416. Publisher's red buckram, gilt device of elephant and fylfot emblazoned on upper, gilt titles, top edge gilt, printed dust-jacket priced 7/6. With several contemporary news-clipping loosely inserted. A little toning. Generally, a clean, near fine copy. Short story collection displaying Kiplings' mastery of short prose, including the supernatural tale 'The Wish House', a strange tale of which Angus Wilson wrote 'the supernatural means by which [the character Grace] secures her wish is neat and frightening and all that a psychic story requires.' Also includes 'The Gardener', often cited as supernatural, but actually concerned as much with the power of the human spirit, plus 'A Madonna of the Trenches', another of Kiplings's ghostly tales set during the horrific Great War; this story concerning apparitions or spirit manifestation.
