Contemporary tan half morocco, with slightly raised bands, gilt titles to brown labels, and further gilt decoration to spines. Purple textured paper over boards; fore and lower edges untrimmed. Armorial bookplate of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana to front pastedown of each volume. A number of faint washed institutional stamps to flyleaves and title pages of all volumes. Crisp and clean throughout. Moderate wear and bumping to bindings, and partially erased black ink shelf marks to the tail of each spine. An attractive leather bound set with significant provenance. Very good. An important English translation of Plutarch's parallel Lives, first published in six volumes in 1770. Bernard Quaritch have identified the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, formed by Alexander William, 25th Earl of Crawford and 8th Earl of Balcarres, and James Ludovic, 26th Earl of Crawford and 9th Earl of Balcarres as "perhaps the finest private library assembled in the nineteenth century."
