"Books are a hardbound drug with no danger of overdose. I am the happy victim of books."
— Karl Lagerfeld

London: George Newnes, 1902. [Sherlock Holmes] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.[viii]; 359; [1]. Publisher's red cloth blocked in gilt and black to upper board and in gilt to spine to a design by Alfred Garth Jones. Illustrated with sixteen plates by Paget. No inscriptions or bookplates. Internally clean, edges bright, cloth fresh with some light wear only to the extremities, faint cup ring to upper. Importantly, the spine is nicely rounded (used or well-read copies of this book tend to lose the shape of the spine). A most attractive example. Arguably Holmes' most charismatic case, and one which has consequently been adapted for stage and screen numerous times - and only about half of those times as a parody. Item #60282
Green and Gibson A26a.
