Tunbridge Wells: J. Clifford, 1829. [Town Guide] FIFTH EDITION. Small Octavo (17 x 11cm), pp. viii; 188. With 22 engravings, including four folding plates, a vignette title page, and a frontispiece folding map. Not including an engraving of the Royal Kent Hotel, but with two engravings of Mereworth House. Contemporary or slightly later green half calf, with gilt titles to black label, simple gilt ruling to spine, and marbled paper over boards. Heavy spotting to plates and title page, with some misfolds and some tears to folds. One early gathering slightly loose and a little proud. Light spotting throughout, otherwise a clean copy. Moderate wear to binding, with a small split to upper joint. Very good. Jasper Sprange published the first Tunbridge Wells Guide in 1780. Clifford's name replaces that of Sprange between 1817 and 1818, and he took over the firm completely when Sprange died in 1823. This is the first genuinely new edition since 1825. Item #60090
