Contemporary brown full speckled calf, with raised bands, gilt titles to light brown labels, and all edges speckled red. Generally crisp and clean internally. Some offsetting to endpapers and facing leaves. Corner of pp.25/26 of volume I lost, not affecting text. Some damp staining and damage to endpapers and preliminaries of volume IV. Worming to lower margin of volume VI from p.492 to end, not affecting text. Browning to spines, with label to volume IV lost, and a large chip to label of volume VI. Bumping to corners, moderate wear to boards, joints starting, and some chipping to head and tail caps. Very good. A detailed and eloquent history of the first Angevin monarch, marvellously portrayed by Peter O'Toole alongside Katharine Hepburn in 'The Lion in Winter' (1968), who famously ruled more of France than the King of France in the second half of the twelfth century.
