Bound from the parts with the vast majority of sheets in the earliest state of the text. 'Dark' plate opp. p.547 in fine order. Nineteenth century pebble-grained morocco over marbled sides, full gilt back, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. With every title wrapper from the original parts preserved at rear (two out-of-sequence). Bookplate of James Hale Bates to front pastedown. Some trivial spotting to plates else contents exceptionally clean. Small stain to foot of final wrapper else bright and fresh; condition suggests they were well kept prior to binding up, with no tears or noticeable ageing. Joints a little rubbed else sound. A particularly fine copy. The following first issue points are present: In the title-page vignette, Capt. Cuttle's hook is erroneously on his left arm; p.xv, no page entry for the frontispiece and vignette, and no quotation marks around "the Party" line 2; p.14, ten lines up, "aint" has no apostrophe; p.26, line 11 has "fidgetty"; on p.40, l.16-17 "shewed" and "shew" instead of "showed" and "show"; p.284, fifth and sixth lines from the bottom, "Delight" instead of "Joy"; p.324, last line "Capatin" for "Captain"; p.426, line 9 "if" is not present, p.582, the last line has no full stop. The only later state point found is the page number being present on p.431 (lacking earlier). Item #59818
