The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.

London: Chapman and Hall, 1839. [Classic Fiction] FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Bound as two volumes. Octavo (22 x 14cm), pp.[2] xvi; 320 [4]; pp.[6] 321-624 [4]. With 39 engraved plates by Phiz, and a frontispiece portrait of the author by Maclise. Half-title bound into volume II. Including the major first issue points "visiter" for "sister" on p.123 line 17, and "latter" for "letter" on p.160, 6 lines up. All the plates up to p.45 have the imprint of Chapman and Hall, which indicates that they come from the 'earliest issues of the monthly parts' (Hatton and Cleaver, p.134). Lacking just three minor points from the long list in Smith. Bound in contemporary brown full diced calf, with gilt titles to black labels, and further gilt decoration to spines. All edges speckled red; grey-coated endpapers. Toning and spotting to plates as usual, with some offsetting to facing leaves, but not over-much. A few bumps and chips to edges of volume I. Moderate wear to bindings, with some bumps and scratches. An attractive pair in an unusual style. Very good. The first of Dickens' romances, it is perhaps most famous for its extraordinary and memorable villains, Wackford Squeers and Ralph Nickleby. Item #59488
