Light to moderate spotting throughout; final volume lightly toned. Heavier toning and spotting around maps, as usual. A few small tears to maps in the usual places. Spines sunned, and moderate general wear and bumping to bindings. Very good. A harbinger of the heroic nineteenth-century tradition of German Classical scholarship, Heeren's magisterial work on the politics and trade of the Ancient world was one of the first histories of its kind when it began to take shape in print and public lectures in the 1790's. Although his books were derided and largely forgotten by the time of his death, they were undoubtedly influential in the rapid intellectual development of subsequent decades. In its final form in this French translation, there are three volumes on the ancient civilisations of Asia, including India and the Near and Middle East; three volumes on the civilisations of Africa, including Egypt, Carthage, and Ethiopia; and one volume on Europe (specifically Greece).
