Contemporary tan full calf, with slightly raised bands, gilt titles to contrasting red and black labels, and further gilt decoration to spines. Light brown endpapers; all edges speckled red. A large armorial bookplate of Chelsea Public Library to front pastedown of each volume. Small associated stamps to title pages and first / final leaves. Stamped lending sheet to rear fly-leaf of each volume. A tear to p.43/44 of volume VI, and very occasional light spotting. Crisp and clean overall, with some fairly light bumping and scratching to bindings; an attractive set. Very good. Heavily revised from the original edition of 1769, including more than 400 new entries, mixing potted biographies of notable characters from English history with catalogue descriptions of various engraved portraits.
