Lacking half-title to volume II. Contemporary brown full calf by RELFE BROS of London, with gilt titles to black label and further gilt decoration to spine, as well as the arms of the Worshipful Company of Drapers stamped in gilt to upper. All edges and endpapers marbled, with gilt dentelle to turn-ins. Marks to front pastedown where a prize plate has been removed. Light spotting to preliminaries, otherwise crisp and clean internally. A little light wear and a few small bumps to binding. Very good. Helps employs the Ancient genre of dialogue to present this considerable tome. Of particular note is an essay detailing his comprehensive rejection of slavery, which was later expanded into a two volume work in its own right. Originally published in 1847 and 1859. Item #59142
