With 40 engraved plates by 'Phiz,' including two frontispieces. Contemporary black half calf, with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spine, and light blue cloth over boards. All edges and endpapers marbled. Rubbing to corners, joints, and head / tail of spine. Very good. First published in 1844, Dickens regarded Chuzzlewit, his final picaresque novel, as his best work. Among its memorable cast of characters are Seth Pecksniff the plagiarising architect, Mrs Gamp the matronly alcoholic, and the definitive patriarch Old Martin Chuzzlewit. Item #58901
