London: Chapman and Hall, 1874. [Social Commentary and Short Stories] VINTAGE COPY, a later edition. Octavo (22 x 15cm), pp. vi; 526 . With 40 engraved plates by Cruikshank, including a frontispiece and vignette title page. Contemporary brown half morocco, with gilt titles and decoration to spine, and brown cloth over boards. All edges and endpapers marbled. Light toning to preliminaries, otherwise a nice clean copy internally. Quite heavy wear to spine, with some restoration to head-cap, and extensive re-colouring. Some bumping to corners. Good. The author's first major published work. Though not a novel, the book has retained the high regard which it first met, and displays the young Dickens's piercing understanding of early nineteenth-century English society at its sharpest.
