Item #58432 Lorna Doone. A Romance of Exmoor. R. D. BLACKMORE.

Lorna Doone. A Romance of Exmoor.

London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company, no date [1893]. [Romantic Novel] FINELY BOUND, the thirty-ninth edition. Octavo (18 x 13cm), pp.viii; 517 [5]. Contemporary red full calf by ALLMAN & SON of London, with gilt titles to green label and further gilt tooling to spine. All edges and endpapers marbled. Top and fore edges heavily faded. Boards slightly bowed, with a distinctive heat or damp mark to lower board. Light rubbing and toning to spine. Very good. First published in 1869, 'Lorna Doone' is the ultimate Victorian Romantic Novel, set in Devon in the period between the Restoration and the Monmouth Rebellion. As well the Romeo and Juliet style romance between stolid farmer John Ridd and Gypsy Princess Lorna, the book also brilliantly dramatises the Great Frost of 1683 and the Bloody Assizes of Judge Jeffreys, all while describing the landscape and country ways with an affection worthy of Hardy.
