London: Jonathan Cape, 1963. [Espionage fiction] FIRST EDITION. Two copies (regular and variant). Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.255; blank. Publisher's red cloth lettered in gilt to spine. Black "office stamp" motif and blind-stamped DOWNGRADED TO UNCLASSIFIED on front board, with plain black endpapers. Dust-wrapper designed by Raymond Hawkey. With a second copy, in publisher's black cloth without blocking to the front cover, lettered in silver to the spine, with 'crossword' printed endpapers and the loose 'crossword competition' form inserted. Both books with some acceptable marking/toning, the competition slip has an area of browning/soiling. A very good pair. The red decorative cloth with gilt lettering is the publisher's standard binding. The plain black cloth with silver lettering is the variant binding, possibly a trial. The variant is rather scarce in our experience and is not noted in the Deighton bibliography. Item #58280
