London: Spencer Blackett, 1889. [Fantasy Adventure] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.331 . With eight black and white illustrated plates by Greiffenhagen and Kerr, including a frontispiece. Publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper, and plum-coated endpapers. Large gum mark to front pastedown where a bookplate has been removed. Some toning to edges, otherwise a lovely clean copy. Light wear to cloth. Very good. The third title in the Allan Quatermain series (following 'King Solomon's Mines' and 'Allan Quatermain'), together with three short stories previously published in periodicals. The tale of Allan's second wife Stella is a classic African fantasy adventure, complete with magic and ghosts, plus Haggard's trademark gripping narrative style. Item #57956
