"A book should serve as the axe for the frozen sea within us."
— Franz Kafka

Bangalore: The Good Shepherd Convent Press, 1922. [Anglo-Indian Cookery] THIRD EDITION. Octavo booklet (21 x 13cm), pp.[2] xxii; 116 [6]. Interleaved with occasional advertisements on coloured paper. Publisher's paper covers lost. Still firmly bound, but heavily worn and dog-eared, with heavy creasing and chipping to upper and lower advertising leaves. Fair, but otherwise unobtainable. Originally published for the Anglo-Indian community of Bangalore in 1908, the book seems to have been immediately popular, with a second edition following just a couple of weeks later. Reviewers are particularly taken with the 21 different daily menu ideas, and the simple recipes are recommended especially to bachelors, new wives, and anyone setting out on a trip into the jungle. The preface explains further that the third edition was delayed by the expense of materials during the First World War, and eventually 2000 copies were issued in 1922. No copies of any edition have been found on Worldcat, and no copies are currently for sale, making this an undeniably rare beast. Item #57944
