The Annals of St. Helen's, Bishopgate, London.

London: Tinsley Brothers, 1876. [Church Architecture and History] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (26 x 17cm), pp.xiv; 454 [2]. With 15 engraved plates, including a frontispiece. Re-backed in burgundy cloth to match publisher's blind-decorated boards, with gilt titles to spine and yellow-coated endpapers. Blue ink ownership relating to the Pitt-Rivers Museum in Farnham, Dorset, to fly-leaf. Abraded 'Withdrawn' stamp to front pastedown. Light pencil notes to p.35, otherwise quite clean internally, with a strong tobacco scent. Quite heavy wear and bumping to cloth, with the blind stamp of the British Library of Political and Economic Science to upper. Very good. A history of the famous London church and its ancient monuments. A former priory church of the High Middle Ages, it was fortunate in surviving both the Great Fire of 1666, and the Blitz of 1940-41, but eventually succumbed to two IRA bombs in the 1990's. Though restored since, its mediaeval stained glass and the epitaphs within were largely destroyed. Item #57940
