New York, NY: H.M. Caldwell Co., no date [circa 1899]. [Sherlock Holmes] PIRATE EDITION. Small octavo (17 x 11cm), pp.216 . With a half-tone portrait frontispiece of the author, and four further illustrated plates. Publisher's tan cloth with gilt titles, and gilt, red and green decoration, to spine and upper. Black ink gift inscription to fly-leaf dated January 1900. A little toned, but far better quality than the usual paper used in pirate editions. Fairly light wear to cloth, but for losses to tail cap and upper top corner. Very good. A Study In Scarlet (1887) was the first Sherlock Holmes novel, featuring the debut case for the great amateur detective Sherlock Holmes and his new-found colleague, the narrator Dr. John Watson.
