New York, NY: H.M. Caldwell Co., no date [circa 1898]. [Sherlock Holmes] PIRATE EDITION. Small octavo (17 x 11cm), pp.iv; 216. With a half-tone portrait frontispiece of the author, and four further illustrated plates. Publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spine, and gilt, black and grey decoration to spine and upper. Black ink gift inscription to fly-leaf dated 1898. pp.5-12 split right along guttering and nearly detached. A little toned, but far better quality than the usual paper used in pirate editions. Some pencil scribblings rubbed out to fly-leaf and p.1. Gilt to cover quite dulled and rubbed; otherwise fairly light wear to cloth. Good. A Study In Scarlet (1887) was the first Sherlock Holmes novel, featuring the debut case for the great amateur detective Sherlock Holmes and his new-found colleague, the narrator Dr. John Watson.
